Ahead is an emotional intelligence app that helps users navigate personal growth through interactive journeys. As a founding designer, I was responsible for creating its brand identity and the product from the ground up. My focus was on making personal growth feel actionable and rewarding, using gamification and habit-forming principles to turn abstract concepts into joyful progress.
From mascot development to interaction design, my time here was truly unique—I had an impact across all design touchpoints. Now loved by users around the world for its intuitive, expressive, and emotionally resonant visual system, I helped Ahead carve out its place in the EdTech space and drive rapid growth.

What was it all about?
In today’s fast-moving world, emotional intelligence is more important than ever. Ahead set out to make learning about emotions feel approachable, fun, and actionable. My challenge was to build a brand and product around topics that many doubt can be effectively taught through an app–how do we guide users through deeply personal journeys while creating a real sense of progress and achievement?


Learning Path That Sticks
One of the biggest challenges we tackled was the journey home, the main hub where users track progress and stay motivated. Changing behavior takes time, and people needed the right action plan to stick with it. With so many books, coaches, and courses covering the same topics, how could we make our product stand out and actually help users build better habits?
We focused on making learning fun, bite-sized, and actionable. We leaned on constant user research, competitor analysis, A/B testing, and feedback, to shape an experience that kept users engaged and moving forward.


Journey designs that evolved over the years
Onboarding for a Breakthrough
We transformed onboarding into a journey of self-discovery, not just introduction. User research showed engagement increased when personal insights came early. Our redesigned process uses guided reflection with targeted questions to uncover patterns and self-understanding. This insight-driven approach naturally fed into our referral system as users eagerly shared their discoveries. The result was higher retention and organic growth.

Lessons for Empowering Action
We set out to create a seamless first-mile experience that instantly clicked with users and made the app’s value obvious from the start. The sooner they hit that aha moment, the better their retention. Ultimately this helped with higher conversion to paid subscriptions.
Collaborating closely with the content design team, we kept refining the journey and lesson structure to make learning not feel like a chore. The goal was to help users grasp key concepts quickly and apply them right away, turning insights into action.


Gamified Growth Experience
We added variable rewards throughout the learning path to keep learning fun and motivating. Gamification is a great way to build lasting habits, so we made sure it was part of the entire experience.
Not all users felt the same about heavy game-feeling. Some preferred a more structured approach, while others loved the playful aspects. To strike the right balance, we fine-tuned the design to keep the experience rewarding without overwhelming users. We listened closely to user feedback throughout the process.

Next, we redesigned progress tracking to make achievements feel more tangible. Every milestone was designed to give a sense of accomplishment. How does leveling up serve the user, and how much of an in-app game is this, is it separate from users real lives? We focused on a narrative to make the in-app progress reflect real-life growth while guiding users for next steps.

Daily Core Features
We launched the Ahead app focusing on anger management, addressing a common issue users struggle to control in the moment and later regret. The three key tools work together harmoniously: Reflection helps users analyze past incidents, Techniques provides strategies for similar situations, and Check-in prevents future outbursts. Users can combine these tools throughout different stages of managing their anger responses.

Joyful Branding System
I had the unique opportunity to shape the brand while working simultaneously on the product. This dual perspective helped me create a cohesive experience where every touchpoint reflected the app’s personalized and gamified approach.
We wanted every part of the brand to feel joyful and inviting. By adding character (both in personality and through a literal mascot), I created a system that made learning about emotional intelligence feel warm and approachable. Users consistently share how this approach makes learning engaging rather than daunting.
I developed a vibrant color palette and expressive illustrations to convey a wide range of emotions. With new journeys in the pipeline, the character’s narrative was designed to evolve alongside the product, ensuring a scalable system that could grow with the brand.





Illustrative, inclusive storytelling
We leaned into illustrations to make emotions feel more universal–after all, everyone experiences feelings differently. Our animated characters and carefully picked visuals create a brand that's both fun and inclusive, letting users see their own emotional journeys in the app instead of being boxed in by specific images.

Outcome
Since launch, Ahead has grown into a category-defining product with over three million users with nearly 10,000 five-star reviews. It was also featured as App of the Day in over 20 countries. In 2024, it became a finalist for Apple Design Award in Social Impact category.
Users frequently praise not only the app’s features and functionality, but also its inviting and vibrant design. The brand system we built continues to scale, supporting new journeys and features while staying true to the original vision—making emotional growth approachable, engaging, and impactful.
